Chapter 16

Dominick cupped his hands to the window and stared out into the night. There was nothing to see, not that he’d expected much. He could still hear the rain lashing the earth outside and sighed. Even if it abated by morning, the ground would still be far too muddy for riding or walks. He was trapped inside for another blasted interminable day.

The days since his argument with Alfie had passed grey, silent, and wretched. The ones since his antics the day of the funeral even more so. He saw Alfie at meals, but their conversations were brief and mostly to do with the rain which had continued to fall unabated for almost a week and only deepened the gloom surrounding them.

After he’d had time to calm down and think about it, Dominick looked back on the way he’d acted with sheepish regret. He’d been as moody as a child who saw another playing with his favorite toy, and reacted poorly. He was still hurt by what Alfie had said, but he could see now he'd been needling Alfie, trying to goad him into a row. So he couldn’t be surprised when the man gave him what he wanted. Compounding his bad behaviour by taunting Alfie about both his leg and Jarrett when they were in public and Alfie unable to respond had been especially cruel.

He was tired of their silent war. He’d moved the chest blocking the passage between their rooms that first morning, feeling like a hysterical maiden who’d barricaded herself in to protect her virtue. But in all the days since, Alfie hadn’t tried to come through to his room again, and Dominick hadn’t had the courage to try to get into his either. He knew it made him a coward, but he was terrified that if he tried, he’d discover that Alfie had blocked his side as well.

He didn’t know what to say to make it right between them, and any time he tried, all the important words fled from his mind and those that were left were so meaningless as to be embarrassing. There was only so much that could be said about the weather!

He turned away from the window. Somewhere in the house, Alfie was sure to be curled up with a book by a fire. A hollow ache echoed in his chest at the image. He couldn’t seem to find his way back to that. He missed Alfie. Not just his beautiful body or whip-crack mind, but just the simple comfort of being close to him.

He shook himself. Right, this was getting ridiculous. Sighing and moaning never got anything done. He could either continue to mope around like a pathetic character from a melodrama, or he could take action and fix things. But how? He had no idea how to get Alfie talking to him again.

So find something interesting to say.

He considered it. Discussing the rain for the thousandth time was obviously out. The bawdy joke he’d learned from Jarrett was also out, for obvious reasons.
